Getting away from it all

The seaside resorts of Blackpool, Southport, New Brighton and Llandudno were once the most popular holiday destinations for Warrington people.

Following the creation of the August Bank Holiday in 1871, employers in Warrington started to organise summer outings for their workers. With the railway line through Warrington it was possible to charter a train or to travel by road in a charabanc.

British holiday camps, such as Butlin's, became popular in the 1930s and enjoyed their heyday in the 1950s. The Youth Hostels Association, founded in 1929, gave more people the opportunity to take their holidays in the countryside. A network of hostels opened offering cheap accommodation for young people. Many people remember spending their first holidays away from home staying in hostels or camping.

Holidays abroad became more accessible in the 1950s with cheaper air travel and the introduction of the package holiday. The British seaside resorts started to lose their appeal with more people going abroad for guaranteed sunshine and new cultural experiences.

Today what would have been dream holidays for people at the beginning of the last century have become a reality for many of us. Affordable worldwide travel has broadened the horizons for the new generation of holidaymakers.
