| Introduction
This on-line exhibition shows how people from Warrington have occupied their leisure time. Click on the links on the right of this page to explore the exhibition further. Many people did not have the opportunity for leisure in the past. They worked long hours, earned low wages and often did very physical jobs. Saturday was part of the working week. A half-day holiday on Saturdays was not a reality for some people until the 1930s. In the past people lived at home longer and contributed their wages to the family income. For married women time was spent raising a family and looking after the home. Men were more likely to play sport or go out to the pub. In Victorian Warrington many leisure activities were limited to the wealthier factory owners and professional classes. They could afford to go away on holiday to the seaside or take tours of the Lake District. Holidays were rare for the working classes and a day trip to the seaside or to Liverpool or Manchester was looked forward to. Since the 1950s with an increase in wages and with more women going out to work, people have had more money to spend on leisure pursuits. In 21st century Warrington leisure is more accessible than ever before.
