Music maestros

Musical concerts were held in the Assembly Rooms in the Old Lion Hotel on Bridge Street from the beginning of the 19 th century. The town's premier music venue, the Parr Hall, opened in 1895.

There was an upsurge of interest in choral music in the 19th century. Warrington Musical Society was formed in 1834 staging around five concerts a year. Warrington Male Voice Choir, one of the oldest in Great Britain, can trace its roots back to 1898. Crosfield's choir

The brass band movement took off in the 1850s. Brass band instruments were ideal for playing outdoors. A bandstand was all that was needed to keep performers dry. Crosfield's Soap Works Band was very successful and in 1911 they won the prestigious Crystal Palace trophy. Crosfields Soap Works Band

In 1883 local musician, Mr. Down, decided that the town needed an orchestra. He formed a string orchestra attracting young musicians from across the town and in 1886 also started a military band. He held rehearsals in a wooden outbuilding in the garden of his house in Stockton Heath. The orchestra and band played in numerous fundraising concerts in Warrington and Mr. Down became a well respected figure in the town.
