| The brass band movement took off in the 1850s. Brass band instruments were ideal for playing outdoors. A bandstand was all that was needed to keep performers dry. Crosfield's Soap Works Band was very successful and in 1911 they won the prestigious Crystal Palace trophy. |

In 1883 local musician, Mr. Down, decided that the town needed an orchestra. He formed a string orchestra attracting young musicians from across the town and in 1886 also started a military band. He held rehearsals in a wooden outbuilding in the garden of his house in Stockton Heath. The orchestra and band played in numerous fundraising concerts in Warrington and Mr. Down became a well respected figure in the town. |
