A sporting town
Warrington has been a town of many sports. Sport has been played for decades, both friendly and competitively, and at amateur and professional levels.
| Early sporting events held in Warrington included the Regattas of the 1840s. The River Mersey was the focus for these rowing and sailing races. For the 1842 Regatta a Grand Stand was erected on the banks of the river for more privileged spectators to get the best views of the day's events. |
| Arpley Meadows was once the main focus for sports meets in the town and these events were a major attraction for the townspeople. The Warrington Cricket, Bowling and Association Football Club was founded at Arpley in the 1870s. This was the predecessor to the Warrington Sports Club at Walton Lea. |

Warrington 's first Public Baths opened in 1851, following the passing of the Baths and Washhouses Act in 1846. Facilities included a 'cold swimming bath for gentlemen' and a 'tepid plunge bath for ladies'. |

| Today sport is thriving in Warrington. Gone are the days when sport was the preserve of gentlemen of the town and women were excluded from playing sport. |
