Yesterday's toys
An Edwardian Nursery filled with wax and china dolls, an army of toy soldiers, a sturdy rocking horse, Noah's Ark and a Jack-in-the-box conjures up the cosy world of yesterday's childhood.
Even then the reality was very different for most Warrington children who were lucky to have a cheap penny plaything. Today's toys are very different from those of our grandparent's day

Toys are more sophisticated, working by batteries or microchips instead of clockwork or hand-operated. Hand-made toys in natural materials, such as wood or china, have been replaced by machine-made toys in moulded plastics. Sharp-edged tinplate toys and toxic lead-paint have no place in the safety-conscious nursery. The traditional toyshop has been replaced by superstores, catalogue or internet sales and marketing campaigns linked to TV and cinema create new toy crazes.

Today's children demand grown-up "toys" such as the latest generation of mobile phones, whilst their parents scour car-boot sales and antique fairs collecting their childhood favourites.
