Artists, photographers and writers who have lived in or visited Warrington have left the town with a rich and varied collection of paintings, drawings, photographs and writings. They help us to build a picture of the town and how it has changed and developed.
Artists have been recording the changing face of Warrington for centuries. Local artist, Oswald Garside, who trained at the Warrington School of Art has left the town with numerous paintings of local scenes.
Photographs provide a more accurate record of the town as it took shape. The earliest photographs of the town date from the 1850s. The Warrington photographer, Thomas Birtles, had a commercial photographic studio in Warrington. He also provided a valuable social record of Warrington's housing and industry around 1900, a time when the townscape was rapidly changing.

Warrington 's residents have written about their memories of the town as it has changed and developed. William Beamont, Warrington 's first mayor, wrote at length about the Victorian town. Other residents wrote about the rural perimeters of the town where they grew up, showing a contrast with the industrialised centre.
