The Professions |
During the 20th century the word 'profession' became more widely used than it was in the past. For example many groups of workers, teachers and doctors amongst them, would not have been regarded as 'professionals' a century ago. One of the most important trends in employment is that society has placed an increasing value and status upon such groups.
New professions have emerged such as management consultants, advertising and marketing executives and accountants. |

We can trace the legal profession in Warrington into the 17th century when the town was a place to which people would come from surrounding villages if they needed the help of a lawyer. Two centuries later the town's lawyers were an important element in local society and played a key role in administration. Lawyers were prominent in the campaign by which the town achieved borough status in 1847. It is no coincidence that the leader of the campaign and the first Mayor of the new borough of Warrington was William Beamont, the town's top solicitor.
